ALWAYS ON THE RUN, ALWAYS ON THE GO. FASTER – BIGGER – HIGHER – FURTHER!
In industrialised countries in particular, stress has become a real epidemic. Depression, burnout, adjustment disorders – Humanity is suffering from mental illnesses which have serious consequences for health.
Stress is an instinctive and innate response to a potential threat, such as an encounter with a predator or other life-threatening situations. It ensures survival and promotes the automatic defence mechanism, which is also known as the fight-or-flight response.
Nowadays the risk of predator attack is unlikely, and it is not only life-threatening events which produce this reaction. Triggers may include, for example, financial or professional concerns, relationships, children, time constraints, transport, food, etc.
When our body is constantly busy with preparing for a fight, it focuses all its energies on survival. The longer the stress continues, or the more frequently it occurs, the earlier the alarm system overreacts, bringing body and mind out of kilter.
